Part 1: Autorecloser Relay Testing

Welcome to another series of tutorials on autorecloser relay testing. Autorecloser relay is a device that will close the circuit breaker automatically in time of tripping event or power interruption due to fault on a power system. In other case, autorecloser is integrated in the protective relays like line protection and feeders protection. It has a sets of parameters than can be modified according to the requirements of the network like number of shots, dead time or how the circuit breaker will reclose, reclaim time or how long the autorecloser relay reset to a ready state after the sequence of reclose and others.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to setup autorecloser relay connection to the omicron test set like CMC in different scenario like on the bench testing and onsite testing.

Bench Testing Wiring Connections With Omicron CMC Aux DC Supply

In the image above, the relay is powered by omicron aux dc as well as relay input. The CMC binary output 1 is assigned to CB Close, output 2 is assigned to CB Open and output 3 is assigned to autorecloser initiate. If autorecloser is integrated with the protection relay the autorecloser initiate may not be required. Binary output 1 and 2 is very important because, we will assign there the 52a and 52b in the hardware configuration of the test set. And also the binary input 1 and 7, we will assign there the trip and close command in the hardware configuration of the test set.

Bench Testing Wiring Connections With External DC Supply

In the image above relay is powered by other DC generator if the CMC aux dc can't drive to power up the relay. Apart from that, the wiring connections are pretty much the same. And also, autorecloser initiate may not be required.

On-site Testing Wiring Connections

In the image above, using power supply is not required. In this stage, we are using the dc on-site. Just connect the binary outputs of the test set into CB status at the terminal block. Use test connector to ensure that the connection is intact. See the image below. The binary inputs of the test set should be connected into test plug terminal which is inserted to test block or test switch. And also, autorecloser initiate may not be required.

On-site Testing Wiring Connection Using The Actual Circuit Breaker

In the image above, binary output 1 and 2 is not required and also the initiate may not be required. We will not disconnect any wires from the terminal block. Just connect the binary input 1 and 7 in to test plug and bypass the isolation to do the actual trip and close of the circuit breaker. And also, autorecloser initiate may not be required.

So, that's all the setup in testing of autorecloser relay.

In the next tutorial of this series, I will show you how to setup the test set software to enable us to test properly the autorecloser relay.
